We often talk about color and it can be one of the most important underlying factors that creates the mood for your room. If you use soft relaxing colors in cool shades such as found in the green and blue families, you can add a lowkey touch to your room. The use of color to heal physical and mental distresses is called chromotherapy and it dates back to both the ancient Chinese and Egyptians who practiced the art of color healing extensively.

The color has the most effect on people in the cool tones is thought to be green. The color that is thought to have the most influence over people's moods in the warm spectrum is red, which coincidentally is the opposite of green on the color scale. Experts in many fields interior designers, psychologists, experts in feng shui and even people in the advertising industry agree that green is a color that makes people feel calm and balanced. No one is quite certain why, tests to determine if green affects our brain chemistry, cultural meanings, or it's just a fluke, have yet to be fully proven. However, recent studies have shown that when exposed to green colored paper or placed in a green room, a person's heart rate drops, blood pressure lowers, and muscles relax, while hot colors like red or orange cause these values to rise. Even some prisons use green in the cells and report a lower incidence of aggression among inmates.

If the thought of a room dominated by the color green seems overwhelming to you. Make some soothing additions to your decor by using greens in all their glory in various accent pieces. You can have predominately green window treatments, green pillows and even an accent piece like a green candle stand. All will add to the feel of your room and bring the cool calmness that comes with the color green.
